Minecraft's Dappled Forest Update (26.3): Everything New

Autumn is arriving in Minecraft. Mojang's next major update — the Dappled Forest update (version 26.3), the third game drop of 2026 — has reached its Pre-Release stage, which means it's feature-complete and heading for a full release expected in late September 2026. Following this year's earlier Tiny Takeover and Chaos Cubed drops, this one leans hard into a cozy fall theme. Here's everything worth knowing before it lands.

The Star: The Dappled Forest Biome

The centerpiece of 26.3 is a brand-new biome, the Dappled Forest — a cold, autumnal woodland of warm reds, oranges, and yellows. It's the kind of biome players have wanted for years: a permanent slice of fall, full of falling leaves and scenic building material.

Wander into one and you'll find fallen logs, scattered mushrooms, red shrubs, and a canopy that drifts leaf particles down in colors matching the trees above. It's shaping up to be one of the most photogenic biomes in the game.

New Trees, Wood and Blocks

The Dappled Forest brings a whole new wood set built around the poplar tree, which grows in three leaf colors — red, orange, and yellow. Poplar wood has a soft, grayish tone that pairs neatly with stone and the existing pale oak set, giving builders a fresh palette to work with (including poplar planks, boats, and the usual full wood family).

Alongside the trees, 26.3 finally adds two long-requested building blocks: wool stairs and slabs and concrete stairs and slabs, both available in all 16 colors. If you build with color, this update is a big deal. There are also new natural touches like shelf mushrooms growing on poplar trunks and red shrubs you can spread with bone meal.

Camping Comes to Minecraft

This drop adds a genuinely new play element: camping. A new structure, the Abandoned Camp, generates out in the world, and with it come cozy new items — straw beds and colorful cushions to decorate your resting spots. It's a small feature with big potential for roleplay servers, adventure maps, and atmospheric builds.

Graphics and Technical Upgrades

Beyond the visible content, 26.3 ships some meaningful under-the-hood improvements. The headline one is Order-Independent Transparency, a rendering upgrade that makes overlapping transparent blocks (glass, water, leaves) render more correctly. Snapshots along the way also added a new /compute command and expanded data pack and resource pack versions — useful for server admins and datapack creators.

Big Changes for Realms and Servers

Server-minded players get several quality-of-life wins. Recent snapshots introduced Realms invite codes for easier joining, plus new render distance and simulation distance sliders (with render distance pushed up to 25 chunks). The World Options screen was reworked, and game mode controls were split into personal versus forced modes — handy for anyone running a multiplayer world.

When Can You Play It?

26.3 is in Pre-Release now, so the full release is close — most signs point to late September 2026. If you can't wait, you can try it early by enabling snapshots in the Minecraft Launcher's Installations tab. Just back up your worlds first: testing builds can be unstable, and multiplayer usually requires everyone to be on a matching version.

Play the New Update on a Server

Updates like this are best experienced with other people — exploring a Dappled Forest, raiding an Abandoned Camp, or showing off wool-stair builds hits differently on a busy server. When 26.3 goes live, you'll find plenty of servers already running it.
