Minecraft glossary

Every Minecraft and Minecraft-server word you are likely to run into, explained in plain English - 192 terms covering gameplay, redstone, hosting, plugins, PvP modes and server-list jargon. Handy when you are reading a server listing and want to know what SMP, cracked, crossplay or Votifier actually mean.

A

Achievement
The Bedrock Edition name for the progress goals unlocked by doing specific things, such as mining diamonds. Java Edition calls the same system advancements.
Advancement
Java Edition's progression tree. Servers can add custom advancements to guide new players or reward challenges.
Adventure Mode

Aether
A well-known mod (and modpack theme) that adds a floating sky dimension opposite to the Nether.
AFK
Away From Keyboard. A player who is connected but not playing. Many servers kick AFK players after a few minutes to free up slots, and "AFK pools" or AFK farms are builds that keep producing resources while you stand still.
Alt account
A secondary Minecraft account. Most servers limit alt accounts for voting and rewards because they are used to farm bonuses.
Amethyst
A crystal found in geodes underground, used for spyglasses, tinted glass and calibrated sculk sensors.
Anarchy server
A server with almost no rules: no bans for griefing, cheating or stealing. 2b2t is the best-known example. Expect hacked clients, lag machines and hostile spawn areas.
Anti-cheat
A plugin or mod that detects movement, combat and reach exploits. Common examples are Vulcan, Matrix, Grim and Spartan.
Anvil
A block used to rename items, repair gear and combine enchantments, costing experience levels.
API
Application Programming Interface. In Minecraft servers, usually the Bukkit/Spigot/Paper API that plugins are written against.
Armor stand
An entity that displays armor and items. Widely used in server builds for decoration and custom holograms.

A saved copy of a server world and configuration. Automatic daily backups are the single most important thing a server owner can set up.
Beacon
A block powered by a pyramid of iron, gold, emerald, diamond or netherite that grants area status effects like Haste or Speed.
Bedrock (block)
The indestructible block at the bottom of the world and the roof of the Nether.
Bedrock Edition
The cross-platform version of Minecraft that runs on Windows 10/11, consoles, iOS and Android. It uses a different networking protocol than Java Edition, so servers need a Bedrock IP and port (usually 19132) or a proxy like Geyser.
Bedwars
A team minigame where each team defends a bed. Break the enemy bed and their players stop respawning.
Biome
A region type with its own terrain, weather, mobs and blocks - plains, taiga, jungle, mushroom fields, deep dark and so on.
Block
The basic cubic unit the world is built from. One block is one metre in-game.
Bossbar
The bar drawn at the top of the screen for boss fights. Servers reuse it for timers, announcements and event progress.
Bukkit
The original modding API for server plugins. Spigot and Paper are descendants of it, and most plugins are still called "Bukkit plugins".
Bump
Re-posting a server on a server list to push it back up the recent listings. On this site owners can bump their listing on a cooldown.

A block that runs a command when powered by redstone. The building block of map-making and custom server mechanics.
Console
The server's text interface where the owner runs commands and reads logs.
Coordinates
Your position in the world given as X, Y and Z. Press F3 on Java, or enable Show Coordinates in Bedrock world settings.
Cracked server
A server running in offline mode, so players without a paid Minecraft account can join. Cracked servers cannot verify identities, so they need extra login plugins and are more exposed to impersonation.
Creative Mode
Unlimited blocks, flight, and instant block breaking. Used for building servers and plot worlds.
Creeper
The silent green mob that explodes next to you. On many servers creeper block damage is disabled to prevent terrain scars.
Crossplay
