Whitelisting is a server-side allow-list - only Minecraft accounts an admin has explicitly approved can connect. That single setting filters out drive-by griefers, alt-account raiders, and hit-and-run trolls before they ever reach your base.
Most whitelist servers ask for a short application: your age, timezone, what you're hoping to build, and how you'd handle a hypothetical conflict. The process takes a day or two but pays off for months - you join a server where everyone has, at minimum, read the rules.
Visit the server's site or Discord, fill out the application, and wait for staff approval. Once your username is added to the whitelist you can connect normally.
Yes if you want a stable community - no griefers, no constant drama, longer-lived builds and economies. Worth the application step for almost any survival or SMP fan.
