For server owners this was the last really disruptive generation change, which is why so many long-running maps either reset here or drew a hard border and let 1.18 terrain start beyond it. If you join an older map on this list, look for that seam; it usually marks where the new world begins.

Mountains, lush caves and dripstone caves all arrived with this release, and mining servers in particular love it because ore distribution changed to reward going deep rather than strip mining at one level.

What changed about mining in 1.18?

Ore distribution was redone around the new height limits. Diamonds get more common the closer you get to y -59, and iron and copper favour higher altitudes.
